My Role

As a Product Designer, I collaborated with a team of 3 to identify challenges and opportunities in salad preparation. Leading the design process, I co-prototyped an optimised iPad interface informed by research. I then led the implementation of solutions for Create-Your-Own (CYO) topping recording, ensuring seamless integration. We validated client needs and ensured all solutions aligned with project requirements.

As the project lead, I led a remote team of 3 UX/UI designers to revamp ZOLO's website's user experience and interface. Through collaborative efforts, we identified the root cause of low conversions. Leveraging user research and insights, I conceptualised and led the development and prototyping of responsive user interfaces, overseeing the project's visual direction to ensure a cohesive experience across all platforms.

SaladStop! is a Southeast Asian food chain committed to sustainable sourcing and healthy eating since 2009. They offer salads made with fresh, locally sourced ingredients and provide transparent nutritional information to empower individuals to make mindful and healthy choices.

SaladStop! sought to optimise salad artist (SaladStop! employee) efficiency and streamline operations while capturing valuable customer Create-Your-Own (CYO) topping preferences.

They understand that recording CYO toppings could increase preparation time, but they saw the value of this data for informing future menu development. To address this, they partnered with us to develop solutions that streamlined the preparation process and effectively captured CYO data.

Strategic Value

By understanding the salad artists' daily challenges and concerns about recording CYO toppings, we implemented an intuitive iPad system that empowers them to quickly and easily make adjustments, provide customers with dietary advice, and record CYO salad toppings.

This approach minimises learning time, increases artists and operation efficiency, and provides valuable insights for future menu development.

The original iPad order summary interface

Salad artists highlighted the lack of a system for indicating topping exclusions and replacements during interviews. This often led to situations where subsequent artists, unaware of previous artists’ removals based on customer instructions, added back toppings they believed were missing.

This resulted in incorrect orders, increased preparation time and led to stress and overwhelm among the artists, especially during peak hours.

The original iPad system did not differentiate toppings of different price categories by colour

Although the iPad system provides buttons for standard and premium topping prices, the lack of visual differentiation between price categories made it difficult for some salad artists to distinguish between options. Small font sizes and missing images for some toppings made it even harder for them to use the system.

Stepping into the shoes of a salad artist

My experience shadowing salad artists, especially during peak hours was an eye-opening experience. Witnessing them navigate the rush under pressure underscored the significant impact of time constraints. This experience solidified my belief in user-centric design as a solution to real-world challenges. Expanding our observations to include peak periods proved invaluable. Observing salad artists during peak and non-peak hours gave us a more holistic understanding of their needs, enabling us to design solutions that address user needs in all contexts.

Assumptions made vs actual insights from users

Our initial assumptions were based on our first observations. However, our conversation with the salad artists helped us confirm some of our hypotheses and uncovered new insights we wouldn't have found otherwise. This experience further emphasizes the importance of iterative research in ensuring accuracy and addressing user needs. Going forward, I'll prioritise user-centred design and embrace iterative research to create products that empower users and address their needs effectively.
